While I'm not interested in fantasy football, that did give me an idea to create fantasy teams from celebrities that participated in the original Battle of the Network Stars.
I decided to comply the teams of four men and four women for each network(ABC, CBS, NBC) and selected that celebrity based on their versatility or performance in a certain event i.e. the obstacle course.
I have also provided clips to support my reasoning for each star's selection.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy what I think would have been the perfect
ABC
Scott Baio
Howard Cosell referred to Baio as the "top of the heap" when it came to the obstacle course as nobody could beat Chachi when it came to the obstacle course.
Billy Crystal
Before his career as a stand-up comedian which he parlayed into a role on Soap, Crystal was a very good baseball player, earning him a scholarship to Marshall University, until the university shut down the baseball program.
Crystal was able to translate his baseball skills into the 3-on-3 football competition with his accurate passing at quarterback, which included Billy throwing four touchdown passes during the May 1979 battle.
Richard Hatch
Hatch gets selected for his versatility as the skills he obtained as a pole vaulter, gymnast, and lifeguard makes him a man you could plug in any of the sports on BOTNS.
In this montage from the November 1978 battle, you see him give ABC the lead in the kayak relay(against David Letterman), win his obstacle course heat, and then make a diving touchdown catch in the 3-on-3 football competition.
Parker Stevenson
Stevenson was a member of the Princeton rowing team, making him a perfect fit for the kayak relay.
Cathy Lee Crosby
Crosby made history as the first female captain in BOTNS history, primarily because of her excellence as a tennis player, as she was so good she competed at Wimbledon on two occasions.
While there was no tennis competition during her two BOTNS appearances, Crosby made her mark in the 3-on-3 football competition in the May 1980 battle.
Heather Locklear
Penny Marshall
At first glance, Marshall might not be a good selection, but Laverne of Laverne & Shirley was a surprising good athlete as demonstrated by her skills on the obstacle course.
(You had run a number of plays with two females).
Kristy McNichol
Despite the fact that she was a teenager during her three appearances on BOTNS, McNichol is selected for her ability to maneuver the kayak.
Another reason for McNichol's selection is her ability to tame the obstacle course which included her setting the fastest time for a female competitor in BOTNS history on the obstacle course.
CBS
William Devane
While having no background in sports, Devane showed he was a good athlete with his six BOTNS appearances(three with NBC, three with CBS) and gets selected for the CBS team for his excellence at quarterback in the 3-on-3 football competition as in this montage he throws eight touchdown passes over the course of two battles(November 1983 and May 1984).
Gregory Harrison
Harrison proved to be one of the most versatile athletes to ever appear on BOTNS, which makes him an easy selection for the CBS team.
In this montage from his four BOTNS appearances, Harrison catches Scott Baio from behind in the swimming relay, makes two great touchdown catches in the football competition, dunks his future wife Randi Oakes three times in the baseball throw, and beats Willie Aames in the obstacle course.
William Moses
Moses played basketball and football during his high school days which he was able to translate into all of the sports that were competed on BOTNS, including swimming where he anchored the CBS swimming team to three straight victories, with two of those being come from behind wins.
Tom Selleck
Selleck is an easy pick not just because he played one of the coolest characters ever in Magnum P.I., but he was one of the best athletes to participate in BOTNS as this montage from the December 1980 BOTNS shows how he earned a basketball scholarship to the University of Southern California.
Valerie Bertinelli
The One Day at A Time star was one of the best when it came to the obstacle course and that is why she earns a spot on the CBS team.
Lynda Carter
Although she made one appearance on BOTNS and that was for ABC on the very first edition, I selected Carter for the CBS team because 46 of the 59 episodes of Wonder Woman aired on CBS, plus Carter did a number of variety specials for the network.
Also, she did a number of her own stunts on Wonder Woman including this memorable one where she hung from a helicopter.
And, she displayed that she was a strong swimmer during her leg of the swimming relay in the 1976 BOTNS.
And she was the sexiest actress on TV during that time so that is why she is on the CBS team.
Judy Norton-Taylor
Mary Ellen from The Waltons was phenomenal on BOTNS, especially when it came to the football competition as in this montage she catches five touchdown passes over the course of her three BOTNS appearances.Joan Van Ark
Van Ark was an avid runner, having run 12 marathons(including the 1979 Boston Marathon)by the time she landed her role on Knots Landing in 1979, making her an easy pick for the running relay.
But Van Ark earns a spot for her kayak skills, displayed here in this clip from the May 1982 battle.
NBC
Robert Conrad
Conrad was not known for his athleticism on BOTNS, but instead his fiery persona and incredible desire to win which earns him a spot on the NBC team.
Here are now is a montage of Conrad berating the officials over the course of his six BOTNS appearances.
Greg Evigan
B.J. from B.J. and the Bear makes the team because of his strong swimming and kayaking skills as demonstrated in the May 1979 battle.
Mark Harmon
Harmon is a no-brainer as he was the quarterback of the UCLA Bruins from 1972-73 and may have been the greatest athlete to ever compete on BOTNS.Just look at these highlights from the November 1981 battle where he helps lead NBC to victory in the swimming, 3-on-3 football, obstacle course, and running relay.
Michael Warren
Like Harmon, Warren is a former UCLA athlete as he was a guard for two of UCLA's 10 national championship teams under head coach John Wooden and was a consensus all-American in 1968.
For this team, Warren could be another option for NBC on the obstacle course and a member of the running relay, as evident by these highlights from the May 1981 battle.
Erin Gray
Colonial Wilma Deering from Buck Rogers in the 25th Century makes the team because she provides a steady hand in the kayak relay as she gives the NBC team the lead on her portions of the kayak relay in the November 1979 and December 1980 battles.
Brianne Leary
Leary was a former gymnast before she ventured into acting landing a role on CHIPS, where she stayed for only one season but allowed her to participate in two BOTNS: November 1978 and May 1979.
In these highlights from the November 1978 battle, she swims a strong leg during the swimming relay, makes a touchdown catch in the 3-on-3 football competition, is able to keep up with David Letterman during her leg of the running relay and then defeats Maren Jensen of Battlestar Galactica in the obstacle course.
Randi Oakes
Oakes is best remembered for holding the record of being dunked the most times in the baseball throw as she was dunked 16 times during five BOTNS appearances.
But Oakes was one of the most versatile female athletes in BOTNS history as she could catch the football in the 3-on-3 football competition, run the obstacle course, and was a strong runner during the running relay.
